Miles 1018-1034.5 (16.5 miles)
Elevation 8,809'
Gosh today was such a pretty day of hiking! Bummer I didn't take more pics. My mind was in lalaland all day. Lol.
Tom dropped us off at the trailhead in the morning before work. Its funny, remember how I said yesterday that we ended up in the town of Walker? Well, we hitched back to the hwy 108 junction, where Tom eventually picked us up; he brought us to his house, he lived past Walker. So in the morning we ended up driving past Walker a 3rd time. Lol. This whole area is huge for trout fishing, by the way. Driving down the highway, you see dudes randomly pulled off the side of the road, standing by the river. The locals tell me there are huge fish in the river.
Anyhow, we got up at 5am, and got to the trailhead by 6:30am. Kyle and I were both tired, so we ended up walking about 100 yards up the trail and then took a nap in the trees. Lol. That was awesome. We woke up around 10:30.
The landscape today was so diverse. Going away from Sonora pass it was really dry and exposed, almost like we were in the desert again. Then when we got up and over the mountain we descended into a long valley. It was so rad. We followed a stream the whole way down so there was so much water around me. And the wildflowers were amazing!!! Gosh the flowers were prettier today than I ever remembered. They smelled so good :). The hiking was pretty mellow, we had a long descent then a series of ups and downs, but nothing gnarly. Hence we got 16.5 miles in even though we didn't start hiking til 11am. Lol.
The mountains are really cool looking. It's a different color than the last two days, where it was very reddish brown. Now it's a lighter color, almost like the granite in Yosemite. But yeah, it was very beautiful and dramatic views today. So stoked. <3
We got the intel from a southbound section hiker that all the people we've been hiking around the last couple weeks (Caveman, gut feeling, the canadians, etc) are slightly ahead of us. It's funny, he was describing the hikers and we knew exactly who each person was. Lol. That hiker guy was cool. Bummer I dont remember his name.
We camped at a pretty epic location. I took a pic. There's a stream off to the left of the pic, so not only did we have plenty of water, but I got to fall asleep to the sound of the stream. Epic. :). Usually camping this close to water is super gnarly buggy. The mosquitos have been quite manageable since Sonora pass. Hopefully it stays this way! :)
